I really like your list!
That Oneohtrix album still blows me away, and Demdike Stare just kept growing on me more and more all year.
I need to check out that Daniel Menche album, and so far I’ve been hearing really good things about his new 2012 release Guts.

I’m a bit late to the party here but what the heck…..

Great review and totally spot on. I’ve been a fan of CB for over 20 years and its true they did go through a commercial industrial dance phase which hasn’t dated well (and which they’re sadly best remembered for)…..but really this was for a couple of years in their 30+ year career.

Many of their releases ( and there must be over 30 by now) recycle tracks from other releases in various ways so there is a lot of rehashing …… Joe Papas weird operatic vocals are often the only constant factor as they skip styles from one release to another but sometimes these are completely absent.

IMO gems in their canon imo include:

Songs from the Ashes – neo classical / medieval / religious themes
The Poisoner – dark ambient
Our Journeys End – dark dub
The Drowning – noisy sewer ambience, amazing album!
Curd – Early noisy rhythmic experiments (not power electronics)
Inanition – 2 disc comp…..1st disk is a mix of dark ambience and tangerine dream style ambient sequencing, 2nd disk is a well chosen ‘greatest hits’ collection covering most styles but omitting the industrial dance stuff. This is a great place to start with CB.

great release indeed ! the first one i bought actually, i think from the Staalplaat store in Amsterdam … i hadnt realized it had become so iconic in the meantime. from there i bought the other Releasing Eskimo release, by Aube, great discovery too !

ah ah knowing you a bit from your reviews, you HAVE to try “Constant Shallowness leads to Evil” : Tunnel of Goats is their really foray into noisy territory…
